Drinking at the porró

Instructions for use !
What is "porró"?

Drinking from a “porró” (pronounced “pourrou”) is quite an art, and any good Catalan must know how to drink with such an object, it seems! But what is it? Well, it’s a kind of glass carafe, which looks a bit like a watering can and fits in one hand. The pitcher is designed for drinking wine in small quantities, a bit like a straw. Drinking from the porró is also a friendly way to share wine at the table, without using glasses, but it is not used to store wine.

How to drink porró?

Tips and tricks!

Drinking from a porró is like “defying the laws of physics”. The first step is to hold the porró in one hand and put the spout close to the mouth. Tilt it slightly so that the liquid goes towards the mouth. And there, the objective is to gradually extend the arm, to move the carafe away from his mouth without interrupting the flow of wine … You see the difficulty coming?

Tilt your head back slightly without spilling wine everywhere. The “real” ones will tell you that you should not store the wine: you should swallow it in small sips while keeping your mouth open! It sounds easy, but it’s an art, really! To finish, you have to bring the porró close to your mouth quickly so you don’t spill the wine. Guaranteed giggles!”

Drinking at the porrio is called “drinking at the regalade”, that is to say drinking directly the wine that comes out of the pitcher at the spout, the pitcher held at arm’s length. Quite an art!
