April 23: SANT JORDI, BETWEEN LOVE AND CULTURE
April 23 is the day of Saint George or Sant Jordi in Catalan. It is the day when culture and love are celebrated. Traditionally Catalan lovers give each other a book and a red rose. But why? We explain…
The legend of Sant Jordi The legend says that in the past, in Montblanc (Tarragona), a ferocious dragon capable of poisoning the air and killing with its breath, frightened the inhabitants of the city. The inhabitants, frightened and tired of his ravages and misdeeds, decided to deliver a person at random every day to appease his anger. A few days later, bad luck struck the princess. When the princess left her home to join the dragon, a knight named Sant Jordi, wearing shining armor, suddenly appeared on his white horse to rescue her. Sant Jordi raised his sword and pierced the dragon, finally freeing the princess and the inhabitants. From the dragon’s blood, a rosebush sprang up, its roses as red as they had never been seen before. Sant Jordi, triumphant, picked a rose and offered it to the princess.
World Book and Copyright Day.
In addition, April 23 is the World Book and Copyright Day declared by UNESCO in 1995. This symbolic date of universal literature marks the passing of the writers William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. This day is a worldwide tribute to books and authors and encourages access to books for as many people as possible.
That is why, for this day, in addition to offering roses, giving the gift of a book is a way to commemorate one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Catalan culture. We can say that it has become a classic to go in search of the latest literary novelties, special editions or even the dedication of his favorite author.
